Katrina on top with six hits in a row: critics

New Delhi, (IANS) British-born actress Katrina Kaif has delivered six back-to-back hits, bagged several brand endorsements and is now a highly sought after heroine - all the qualities needed to be crowned the reigning actress in Bollywood, say film critics.

"Katrina has immensely evolved as an actress. In Bollywood, actors are mostly known for the number of hits that they can deliver. Katrina has won in that respect hands down. She can undoubtedly be called a lucky mascot for her producers," popular film critic Taran Adarsh told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

After wowing audiences in the recently released romantic comedy "Singh Is Kinng" opposite Akshay Kumar, Katrina has successfully displaced top-rung actors, including Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra.

Her success story started with "Namastey London" and continued with "Apne", "Partner", "Welcome", "Race" and now "Singh Is Kinng".

"Last year was simply fantastic and, touchwood, this year is the same. I would like to thank god. I believe in enjoying doing the work I'm doing. It is also good to know that the hard work I have put in has shown result. I will continue to do so," Katrina said.

The 24-year-old star ventured into Bollywood in 2003 and was instantly written off because of her strong British accent. But after five years of hard work and determination, she is one of the most sought after actresses in the Hindi film industry.

Her next is Subhash Ghai's "Yuvraaj", which is about the arrogance and overconfidence of contemporary youth. Set to release in October, critics are confident that Katrina has another hit on the anvil in "Yuvraaj".

Mumbai-based film critic Anupama Chopra says there are high expectations from Katrina's performance in the movie.

"Katrina has had a fortunate choice of films" even though she "had a rather unfortunate start with 'Boom'," Chopra said.

"She is a stunning looking actress and so far she is doing well with her glam doll image. We did see glimpses of an actor in her performance-oriented roles such as in 'Namastey London'," Chopra explained.

Katrina is one of eight siblings, all girls. Her mother is British and her father is from Jammu and Kashmir who has since acquired British citizenship.

The actress spent her formative years in Hawaii but later moved to London. She started modelling accidentally when she was in Hawaii at the age of 14. Thereafter she continued modelling in London till she moved to Mumbai in quest of a career in the world's largest film industry.

She has also moved on to bigger banners and has teamed up with John Abraham and Neil Mukesh for a Yash Raj Films' project. Apart from that, she will be seen in Rajkumar Santoshi's next film, "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", with Ranbir Kapoor.

Besides spinning gold at the box office, Katrina also has an assorted line-up of brand endorsements. These include Nakshatra diamond jewellery and Veet hair removal cream among others.

The actress created waves when she replaced Aishwarya Rai as the brand ambassador of Nakshatra last month, besides bagging the crown of being the most downloaded Indian actress in cyber space.

"Katrina is the perfect representation of the young, trendy and fashionable woman that Nakshatra targets. We feel that Katrina lends a refreshing look to the brand. We are excited about having her on board as the new face for Nakshatra," said Mehul Choksi, chairman, Gitanjali Group and Nakshatra.

Though the actress has acquired a star status in a short span, critics feel that she needs to work on more performance-based roles.

Said Chopra: "Katrina needs to evolve and emerge out of her glamorous image to do meatier roles like the ones Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta were doing two to three years ago."

Jackie Chan and Akshay Kumar together in desi Rush Hour movie

Action king of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar and Chinese action star Jackie Chan are all set to come togehter for the Indianised version of action movie Rush Hour.

Apparently, it was Jackie who made the first move to approach Akshay for working with him in his forthcoming flick . Jackie Chan was very impressed by Akki’s performance in Singh is Kinng and liked his song with American rapper Snoop Dogg. When Akshay got to know about Jackie’s likeness towards him, he got on to work and made a deal with Ashtavinayak to offer them a film together.

A source says, “It is not known who will direct the film, but the buzz is that it will be a known international filmmaker. The project is slated to begin when Chan is free. Unlike The Myth, which has a strong Chinese sense in the script, this movie will be on the lines of Rush Hour where two cultures come together. In the past, Akki has openly said that he’d love to work with Chan and this opportunity comes at the right time.”

What do you think people? Akshay and Jackie together would definitely raise the action scene in India to a great level.

Aamir Khan kicks out Faisal out of Bigg Boss 2

Faisal Khan has never been in awe of his elder brother Aamir Khan and there has always been cold vibes between them but the vibes are going to get stronger day by day as Faisal believes that Aamir has made the bosses of Big Boss 2 to throw him out of the show.

Apparently Faisal believes that Aamir contacted nephew Imran Khan’s girlfriends mother who works for Network 18 (backer of Colors) and asked her to remove Faisal from the upcoming reality show.

An infuriated Faisal says, “They said I was mentally unstable and they wanted me out on those grounds. This happened after a section of the media carried reports about me being mental. I have taken them to the sessions court and will take the matter to higher courts if I am not happy with the verdict. I am being thrown out for other reasons than what they state. I know exactly who is behind all this,” adds Faisal further referring to brother Aamir.

“It’s a pattern. Aamir is hand in glove with the production house in getting me out of the show. He doesn’t want people to know the truth and people to see who the real Faisal Khan is. Imran’s girl friend Avantika’s related to people in television production and they have played their own game. But no one messes with Faisal, and there’s a limit to everything. He is messing with my professional life. I can’t let him do that. I want the public to know who I am and not believe the reports they read in the media. I wanted to do Bigg Boss because it would allow the public to see the real me. It would show everyone what Faisal Khan is made of. I don’t see myself patching up with Aamir in the near future. I don’t believe in giving up. If some one tries to put me down, I won’t sit quiet and suffer. I will hit back at anyone who messes with my personal and professional life. There is God above who will do justice and I have tremendous faith in him.”

What do you think people is Aamir really responsible for Faisal’s debacle?

Rock On is the Face of Rolling Stone This month!

Rock On is surely rocking its way to all the good things it possibly could. Farhan Akhtar’s debut as a singer and actor is larger than any debutante could have ever imagined. As a director we were always sure of Akhtar’s capabilities but his acting and singing prowess have made him an international star.

Rock On as India’s first film on Rock music has become the face of Rolling Stone magazine, considered a bible for Rock music lovers. Its a great achievement indeed.

An obviously thrilled Farhan Akhtar says,

“Doing a film where I play a Rock musician is a dream come true. But being on the cover of Rolling Stone? Man, that’s beyond a dream.”

Apart from that Rock On has said to have set another box-office record. As the Holy Month of Ramadan begins the box office is quite thanda and only average films and gap fillers are released. Movies released in Ramadan and close to Ramadan do not do a very good business. But Rock On has broken the mould by doing a rocking business on the first two days of its release.

McGrath given life membership of Cricket NSW

SYDNEY: Cricket New South Wales (NSW) has granted champion fast bowler Glenn McGrath life membership at its annual general meeting at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert said life membership of the NSW Cricket Association was a fitting tribute to McGrath's brilliant career.

"He has left a lasting legacy for all aspiring young cricketers to emulate," Gilbert was quoted as saying in Daily Telegraph on Monday.

Laxman needs to be more aggressive on the field: Afridi

KARACHI: Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi on Tuesday denied undermining the authority of VVS Laxman, his captain at Deccan Chargers, but maintained that the Indian lacks aggression.

The flamboyant all-rounder started a war of words with Laxman with his unflattering remarks that the Indian lacked both aggression and leadership qualities. Afridi also felt that Adam Gilchrist would have been a better skipper for the Deccan Chargers in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League.

Stung by Afridi's remarks, Laxman said the Pakistani lacked team ethics and criticised him for his outburst without any provocation.

Seeking to placate Laxman, Afridi said he was being misunderstood but maintained that Laxman was not aggressive enough.

"Perhaps what I said about the Chargers team on the television show has come out a bit too strong but my only point was that Laxman needs to be more aggressive on the field," Afridi said.

"There was neither any intention to demean Laxman's stature or contribution as a player and captain nor to create a controversy. I was asked a simple question and I answered it honestly," Afridi said.

Once again making it clear that he was less than impressed by Laxman's captaincy, Afridi said, "I still maintain that Laxman needs to be more aggressive on the field and push his players. In Twenty20 cricket the captain pushes and motivates the players it is such a short game. I just felt that Laxman should have played a bit more on the front foot instead of the back foot," Afridi said.

He also made it clear that it was his personal opinion that Gilchrist was a better captain.

"There is no question of me violating team ethics. I know I disappointed my fans, captain and management in the IPL and I aim to make amends in the next season. In fact I did say clearly that only Gilchrist, Rohit Sharma and Laxman had made some good contributions in the IPL but we didn't click as a team," said Afridi who himself was a big flop with the bat.

Rock On Review

Movie: Rock On; Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Prachi Desai, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Luke Kenny and Shahana Goswami; Director: Abhishek Kapoor; Rating: ****

It’s always been said that to attain something people sometime have to compromise for something. Sometimes these compromises make the journey to the desired future enjoyable and sometimes, people have nothing but to repent for whatever he had done in the name of compromise. The film, Rock On, rocks on that basic thought only.

They, namely Aditya (Farhan), Joe (Arjun), KD and Rob (Luke Kenny), fight hard to take their band ‘Magik’ to the position of number one. They get the opportunity to hit the music chart with an opportunity won in a competition of Channel V. The music channel also provides them with a chance of recording their first album. But no victory comes without its different effects. Here also, they have to compromise few things and the situation takes Joe away from Aditya. Magik gets closed. Aditya leaves all his friends and turns into a businessman while on the other hand, Joe keeps himself happy with his guitar.

Story rolls for ten years. One day Aditya’s wife (Prachi) comes to know about Aditya’s band Magik and to make Aditya happy, she arranges a reunion party for all his friends who were involved in the band. And the reunion gives a rebirth to the band also. They all fight for another chance at the Channel V stage.

Farhan has really overshadowed other actors in his debut film. Others are also looking cool in their respective roles. As far as the film is concerned, it can easily be called a package with visuals mixing properly with audio. Actors are rock stars and their stage presence is superb. While as a film it’s a great gift to the viewers, for listeners, too, it’s a wonderful presentation. After his negative performance in OSO, Arjun has brilliantly proved how matured an actor he is. With Prachi’s performance, it looks like she has a future in Bollywood. The combination of visuals with dialogue looks really nice on the screen. Direction is really praiseworthy.

After a long time, a film is made to touch all the generations. Hats off to Farhan and Abhishek Kapoor.
